One of my favorite practices to put the ego in check comes the teachings of A Course in Miracles.
“I have said that you cannot change your mind by changing your behavior, but I have also said, and many times, that you can change your mind. When your mood tells you that you have chosen wrongly, and this is so whenever you are not joyous, then know this need not be. “
To every ego thought of attack, judgement, criticism, seeing a wrong in you, in another or in a situation, obsessing over a problem say this need not be.
To anything that causes you discomfort say this need not be.
To anything that feels bad say this need not be.
I have learned through keen awareness of my thoughts how much of my thinking was ego-based.
You know your thinking is ego-based because there is a lot of fear, anxiety or lower level thoughts swirling in your head, which are causing discomfort. The ego feels bad simply put and each time you listen to the ego you feel bad. You can choose through the power of awareness that this need not be, this doesn’t have to be.
