The secret to happiness is that there is no secret. Shocker, I know. When we think of happiness what comes to mind? A smiling person who just looks like they are having a lot of fun and we want in on it too!
That is a perceived image of happiness, but what does happiness feel like?
Happiness is the feeling of sand between your toes, the warmth of the sun kissing your face on a chill winter morning, the sweat dripping off your face after a hard workout, the exchange of a smile between you and a stranger.
As you can tell, happiness is not something that we can pinpoint. It is interpreted differently by everyone because not all feelings are experienced the same way. Our feelings will always reflect what we are thinking, and because we have choice over the thoughts we think, we can also choose how we want to feel.
Happiness is not:
It is not and cannot be dependent upon anything or anyone. A thing or person cannot make you happy long-term. It can only make you happy temporarily before you start to find faults, flaws or problems with this thing or person.
When happiness is dependent upon something it becomes a chase or means to an end. I will be happy when I have this, get this, look like this, feel like this, etc. We are always waiting for something before we give ourselves the permission to be happy. Happiness is not a waiting game. What if we didn’t have to wait to give ourselves the permission to be happy? What if we could just be happy right here, right now just because? We can, if we choose to be.
Happiness is a choice, not a chase.
It’s no longer happiness when it becomes a pursuit, something to obtain. Then, it’s just a means to get to where we actually want to be: married, in love, successful, abundant….
You can reach for all of that right now. How? By making a choice to FEEL happy. Feeling happy results in being happy. It means your Being is happy because you feel it in your body, mind and soul.
